Have you heard of 2015’s most underrated accessory?
When I was 5, I was filthy stinkin’ rich with ribbons. I had the rainbow (and more) in colors of solid and patterned hair ribbons, which lived cozily in my own big shoebox. Every morning I exercised my freedom to select whichever polka dot or striped beauty would fly behind my ponytail that day at recess.
See how my bow helps me maintain my status at the tallest sibling?! (at least for a while…)
I do not know quite when I abandoned my treasured ribbon box. But I do know that I spent years after completely ribbon free, collecting drawers full of tacky hair bows and clips with snapped plastic teeth and missing jewels. If I had a dime…
Anyhoo! It wasn’t until my mom and I stumbled into a precious ribbon store nestled in the New York City Garment District that I realized what I had been missing all those years. To my own dismay, I had neglected my trusty box of ribbons! Bright rows of ribbon spools blooming with the rainbow (and more) invited cherished memories of my old favorite morning ritual. It got me thinkin’, when did we all decide that ribbons are only for little girls?
Another shop from mom and my’s favorite ribbon shop in NYC…aren’t they pretty?!
Just like the curve of a smile never gets old, I believe that the dance of an easy ribbon flowing with a ponytail has yet to lose its beauty. And as long as money-saving stays in style too, I think the dime a dozen cost of ribbons should keep them around. With how practical, accessible, and versatile ribbons are, I’m wondering how I (or anyone) could waste any more time or money on another dinky hair clip. Let’s bring ribbons back!
